Denny and I headed out early on Wednesday April 21. No additional stocking had occurred on Laurel Hill near the cabin, but opening day was such high water, I knew there had to be lots of leftovers from the Yinzers wanting to stock up the freezer. We started at 2 on a beautiful sunny day. Saw numerous caddis flying about - by 3:00 they were everywhere - the biggest caddis hatch I have ever seen on Laurel Hill. We landed a couple on dry caddis, caddis nymphs, and x caddis. Denny had landed 3 in the first hour with his sights on 6 - his alltime record for one day.
He broke off on a tree then tied on a new fly - after missing 2 and landing 1, I knew he was onto something. "What did you tie on" I asked. "Not sure - something buggy looking" was the reply. I strolled over to find he had put on a size 18 Blue Winged Olive. The caddis hits had slowed, so I had to give it a try. Landed a few without seeing a BWO in the air -The fish must have had been reliving some fond memories. Ended the day with 7 fish each, a few Penn Darks, and our best up and back trip ever.
